My suzuki sidekick engine rattles when i step on the brakes does any one know why this happens?

I am from chicago and there have been times where i wouldn't warm up the car before i went to work ... could this be part of the problem too?

I know Toyota's when well maintained can reach 300,000 miles when the engine begins to fail. So when does the 1996-1999 Suzuki Sidekick engines begin to fail when the car is well cared for? Is 160,000 miles too much?
